A Conversation with Eddie Odhiambo and Aliyah Anthony
Throughout October, Oxfordshire FA is joining the world in marking Black History Month by celebrating the incredible, invaluable contribution to both the game, and society, made by individuals from the black community.
While we’ve witnessed progression in ensuring that opportunities are available to all, and a reduction in discrimination towards anyone involved in the game, there’s still work to be done. That work starts with education.
To support this, Oxfordshire FA’s Inclusion Football Officer, Youcef El Barhdadi sat down to speak to two members of the local football community to understand their experiences in the game to date, and how we can work to celebrate black culture, influence and impact all year round.
Eddie Odhiambo is Head of Football at Velocity, a football and education programme launched by Oxford City Football Club. Prior to that, Eddie enjoyed a career as a player which saw him represent Oxford United, Stevenage and Newport County, among other clubs. Alongside his role at Velocity, Eddie is also a member of Oxfordshire FA’s Board of Directors.
Aliyah Anthony is Head of Women’s Football at Oxford City Football Club, having progressed through the club’s player pathway herself. Aliyah oversees all areas of female football development at the club, alongside the Velocity college programme.
