Over 50s Football is coming to Banbury

Plans are in place to start regular sessions in the New Year following a successful male over 50s taster event.

Several new players, most of whom had not played any football for years, enjoyed a recent Over 50s Football taster session at a very chilly Easington Sports FC! The success of this event means there are now plans to start regular sessions in the New Year with the hope of starting a team for the 2022/23 season.

If you are from the Banbury area, are over 45 and looking to get back into football, we would love you to get in touch!

If you are interested, please register your interest by contacting Jamie Hunter (Easington Sports FC) via easingtonsports@hotmail.com

Plans for the new sessions will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Michael Thurlow, Football Development Manager at Oxfordshire FA said “I am excited at the prospect of seeing over 50s football come to Banbury as this is where we have a gap in the county. It was fantastic to see so many individuals enjoying themselves playing football again – one said he hadn’t played for around 30 years, which shows it is never too late to pick your boots up again! We want to encourage people in the area to come along and give it a go!”

What is Over 50s Football in Oxfordshire?

In Oxfordshire, we have the unique ‘Oxfordshire Over 50s League’. This is a traditional 11v11 male league which has 13 teams spread across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. There is currently no team from Banbury or the surrounding area in the league.

The players in the league are predominately over 50, but teams can have three players aged 45-49 on the pitch at any one time to help with numbers. Games are 90 minutes and mainly played twice a month on a Sunday afternoon, although the league is flexible with when fixtures can take place. The season runs from September to May.
