Former England Defender Powell To Attend Grassroots Football Awards

Former Charlton Athletic and West Ham United defender Chris Powell will be attending Oxfordshire FA's Grassroots Football Awards on 13 September.

Oxfordshire Football Association is delighted to announce that former Charlton Athletic, Derby County and West Ham United full-back, Chris Powell, will be presenting accolades to the winners of this year’s Oxfordshire FA and McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards ceremony.

Taking place on Friday 13 September at Oxford United’s Kassam Stadium from 7.00pm, the Oxfordshire FA Grassroots Football Awards recognise the hard work, dedication and support provided to the grassroots game by local clubs, leagues and volunteers.

Throughout April earlier this year, nominations were open to the public to put forward their deserving names from within the county for 2019’s awards, with Oxfordshire FA receiving a host of submissions in that period that were later shortlisted and declared winners.

Powell, recently joined Gareth Southgate’s England staff, represented the Three Lions on five occasions between 2001 and 2002 under Sven-Göran Eriksson and is a huge advocate for the importance of grassroots football. The former Charlton Athletic, Huddersfield Town and Southend United manager is also an ambassador for the Football Foundation, which provides grants to aid the development of grassroots facilities and growth of the game.

At this month’s awards ceremony, Powell will present each individual winner of this year’s awards with their accolade. Later, he will be taking part in a Q&A session with the audience, who will be able to quiz the former full-back on everything ranging from his lengthy playing career to his pathway to coaching and management.

Speaking ahead of the event, Chris Powell said: “The value that grassroots football holds within local communities is huge and without the passionate contribution made by individuals, leagues and clubs at grassroots level, it would simply cease to exist.

“As such, I’m very excited to be meeting just a few of the many within Oxfordshire that work tirelessly to develop and grow the game within the county. I’m looking forward to congratulating the winners, but would like to congratulate everybody nominated and all those that perhaps go unsung for their contribution.”

A full list of award winners will be announced on the Oxfordshire FA website and social media channels on Friday 13 September.
