Female Coaches on the up in Oxfordshire

2:18 PM, Wednesday, 02 December 09.

The second level 1 coaching course for females in 2009 completed last weekend with 19 candidates passing, a fantastic achievement for everyone involved. The wet and windy conditions over the three weekends did not hinder the determination of those taking part, keeping spirits high.

Candidates were of all ages, with varying playing/coaching experience and abilities and differing reasons for completing such a course. Some coaches are actively involved in club football or other sports, some are working within inclusion projects (Base 33) and teachers who would like to bring more into the school environment. The course was tutored by Ali Knight which reflected an all female presence during the two full coaching days.

Vicky Bonham (women and girls development officer) states, “The Level 1 coaching course for females is dedicated to providing opportunities for women to access a coaching qualification in a comfortable surrounding. The course is ideal for anyone interested in taking the first steps into football coaching, learning new skills and lifts confidence to another level. It’s been great to see so many more women complete the course, the second to run in one year!”

Kidlington Youth girls new U10 manager, Caroline Whitfield commented “ I got so much out of it to take back to coaching the team (my first post course session last night was tons better) but also as someone who couldn't demonstrate anything to the girls I am now confident enough to show them how to do things! I wish I had learnt to play football sooner!”

Staci Beever, youth worker from Base 33, has been involved in a girls football initiative this year, encouraging girls from the ages of 10 to 16 to come down to the sessions in Witney to learn new skills and have fun. From the ‘Rush’ project, several young people were identified to attend the level 1 course. Staci says “The girls thoroughly enjoyed the course, and were impressed with the balance of theory and practical elements, which kept them engaged. When having to deliver a session in front of the group, which for some was a challenge, the course has definitely boosted their confidence.” The newly qualified coaches at Base 33 will be supported in delivering further initiatives to get more girls playing football.

The course was subsidised by women and girls sponsors Tesco and the National Sports Foundation who support the continued development of the female game.

The newly qualified coaches will be invited to join the female mentoring scheme which will be rolled out in the New Year. Mentors will be on hand to support coaches and workshops will be scheduled throughout the year. This is a great opportunity to network with other coaches and gain many benefits on the way! The scheme is also open to any females who are actively coaching whether they already have a qualification or are keen to work towards.

If you are a level 1 coach and are thinking about taking the next step to complete a level 2 course, why not attend the level 2 prep workshop for females in March. The 6 hour workshop will give candidates an insight into what’s required at this level. Please see details on the right of this page.
