Referee Assessors

Assessors play a vital role in the development of officials at all levels. They are in effect the custodians of the Laws of the Game, ensuring they are applied to a high standard. Assessments play an increasingly greater part in the promotion and appointments of official's right through the game.

An assessor needs to posses excellent communication skills to be able to provide constructive advice both verbal and written along with the following qualities;

  • Substantial Refereeing Experience 
  • Knowledge of current Law 
  • Be able to view game through the eyes of Referee 
  • Be able to critically analyse performance, not being influenced by outside factors 
  • Be able to Identify strengths 
  • Be able to Identify perceived development areas 
  • Offer solutions to eliminate shortcomings 
  • Provide balanced information verbally after a game, ensuring equal time is spent on both positive and development points. This is a crucial especially after a difficult game for the referee 
  • Write a quality, balanced concise report 
  • Be able to influence the referee to improve his performance when he is next on the field of play.

When assessing a referee the assessor will concentrate on the following main on field competencies;

  • Application of Law
  • Positioning, fitness and work rate
  • Alertness and awareness including management of stoppages
  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Advantage
  • Match control

An assessment will not only help improve the standard of an individual referee but will ensure that refereeing standards are maintained throughout Oxfordshire FA referees.
